Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening illness that results from bacterial infection of the meninges. Beyond the neonatal period, the 3 most common organisms that cause acute bacterial meningitis are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitides, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) .
