Adherence of bacteria to mammalian cell surfaces, mediated by bacterial pili or fimbriae, has long been recognized. Pilimediated attachment is correlated to the virulence of the organism. The attachment is followed by colonization of the tissue, eventually leading to intracellular penetration by the bacteria.
