Macrolides have been known for more than six decades, and, since the introduction of erythromycin molecule into therapy, a number of these antibiotics have been developed for clinical use. For years, these drugs have represented a major alternative of beta-lactams for the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria such as ß-hemolytic Streptococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus.
