Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most prevalent human pathogens isolated from hospitalized patients worldwide, and is of increasing importance in the community setting. It causes a wide range of localized and systemic diseases ranging from skin and soft-tissue infections to infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis, bacteremia and necrotizing pneumonia, as well as various toxin and superantigen-mediated diseases.
