Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from a preexisting vasculature. Normally, this process is tightly controlled and does not occur in healthy individuals. In fact, endothelial cells are in general quiescent and do not replicate in the healthy adult. Exceptions are the process of wound healing, the female monthly reproductive cycle, the formation of the placenta during pregnancy, and the development of the embryo.
